1913年に完成したこの公会堂は、当時の大阪市長が、民主主義を体現する公共施設として、市民のために建設したものです。設計は当時有名な建築家であった堀口捨巳が担当し、建物全体に古典的なギリシャ建築の要素を取り入れ、堂々とした立派な姿勢を見せています。
Completed in 1913, the mayor of Osaka at the time built it for the citizens as a public facility that embodies democracy. It was designed by Sutemi Horiguchi, a famous architect at the time, and incorporated elements of classical Greek architecture throughout the building, showing an imposing and admirable attitude.
中央公会堂は、市民に無料で利用できる多目的ホールとしても機能し、大正時代から現代に至るまで、数多くの政治集会や演劇公演、音楽コンサートなどが開催されてきました。また、大阪市民の憩いの場としても愛され、公会堂周辺には中之島公園があり、多くの人々が散歩やピクニックを楽しんでいます。
The Central Public Hall also functions as a multipurpose hall that can be used free of charge by citizens, and has hosted many political rallies, theater performances, and music concerts from the Taisho era to the present day. It is also loved as a place of relaxation for Osaka citizens, and there is Nakanoshima Park around the public hall, where many people enjoy walks and picnics.
現在は、老朽化のため一部閉鎖されていますが、大阪市は公会堂の保存・再生に取り組んでおり、再生事業の一環として、2023年には建物の一部がリニューアルされ、文化芸術施設として新たなステージを迎える予定です。
