当駅は、藤沢市の北部第一土地区画整理事業に伴い、1966年11月7日に小田急江ノ島線の新駅として開業しました.。
This station was opened as a new station on the Odakyu Enoshima Line on November 7, 1966 in conjunction with Fujisawa City’s Northern No. 1 Land Readjustment Project.

湘南台駅は、小田急江ノ島線、相鉄いずみ野線、横浜市営地下鉄ブルーラインともに線内で最も新しい駅です。
Shonandai Station is the newest station on the Odakyu Enoshima Line, Sotetsu Izumino Line, and Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line.
1990年代以降、当駅周辺は急速に発展し、現在藤沢市内の駅では藤沢駅に次いで2番目に利用者が多い駅となっています。

改札口・切符売場などは3社局とも、地下1階の東西自由通路にああります。

地下1階の東西自由通路・地下広場は藤沢市が管理する公道として設置され、24時間通行可能であり、コンビニエンスストア・パン屋・そば屋・床屋などの商業施設や駐輪場なども設置。
The east-west free passage and underground plaza on the first basement floor are installed as public roads managed by Fujisawa City and are open 24 hours a day, and commercial facilities such as convenience stores, bakeries, soba shops, barbers, and bicycle parking lots are also installed.
通路の幅員は約25メートルと幅が広く、地下広場も西口（相模鉄道側）と東口（横浜市営地下鉄側）の2カ所にあり、地下広場を利用したイベント開催などにも活用されています。
The passage is about 25 meters wide, and there are two underground plazas at the west exit (Sagami Railway side) and the east exit (Yokohama Municipal Subway side), and it is also used to hold events using the underground plaza.
