以下は、六波羅蜜寺（ろくはらみつじ）に関するいくつかの興味深い事実です。
創建と由来
空也は醍醐天皇の皇子で、天暦5年（951年）に都に流行していた悪疫退散のため、自ら十一面観音像を刻んで市中を曳き廻り、病人に茶を授け歓喜踊躍して病魔を鎮めたとされています。当初は「西光寺」と称されていましたが、後に「六波羅蜜寺」に改名されました。
本尊と寺宝
六波羅蜜寺の本尊は秘仏の国宝である十一面観音立像です。この像は12年に一度、辰の年に開扉されます。寺宝として、六波羅蜜寺には源平の史蹟や伝統行事が受け継がれています。
観光と参拝
六波羅蜜寺は西国三十三所第17番札所観音霊場、日本最古の都七福神の一つ弁財天の札所として知られ、信仰を集めています。拝観時間は通常8:00から17:00までで、令和館も拝観できます。

大変、ご利益のあるお寺でもあります。境内は、拝観料は無料です。五条坂や清水寺からも近いので、この西国１７番札所のお寺もおすすめです。

西国三十三所17番札所、東大路を挟んで清水寺と反対側にあります。街衆のお寺でもあります。宝物館、空也（くうや）上人像でも有名です。朝は8時から勤行があります。
