history

かつては聖護院の鎮守社でした。この神社は京都三熊野の一つで、地名を冠して京都熊野神社とも称されます。

It used to be the shrine of the Holy Protector. This shrine is one of the three Kumano shrines in Kyoto, and is also called Kyoto Kumano Shrine after the place.

創建は弘仁2年（811年）に修験道の日円上人が国家護持のために紀伊国熊野から熊野大神を勧請したことに始まります。熊野詣を度々行っていた白河上皇も、この神社を厚く崇敬していました。

The foundation began in the 2nd year of Hirohito (811) when the Nichien Jojin of Shugendo solicited Kumano Ōkami from Kumano in Kii Province for the protection of the state. Emperor Shirakawa, who often visited Kumano, also deeply revered this shrine.

平安時代末期には後白河法皇によって鎮守の森が整備され、その周りの森は聖護院の森として知られるようになりました。

At the end of the Heian period, Pope Go-Shirakawa developed the Chinshu Forest, and the forest around it became known as the Shogoin Forest.

神宮丸太町駅から、しばらく東に歩くとある神社です。石造りの鳥居が立派です。大きくはないですが京都の町並みになじんでいて、地元の神社という雰囲気がします。

From Jingu Marutamachi Station, walk east for a while to a certain shrine. The stone torii gate is magnificent. It’s not big, but it blends in with the cityscape of Kyoto and has the atmosphere of a local shrine.

エンブレムに八咫烏が描かれております。境内に、八ツ橋発祥の地、「西尾　聖護院の森」の碑があります。お隣には、八ツ橋の家(基礎店)があります。境内は静かでした。神宮丸太町駅から程近いです。

The emblem depicts a Yatagarasu. In the precincts, there is a monument to the birthplace of Yatsubashi, “Nishio Shogoin Forest”. Next door, there is a house (foundation store) in Yatsubashi. The precincts were quiet. It is not far from Jingu Marutamachi Station.

入り口の門扉にも、社殿正面の提灯の紋にも、あちこちに八咫烏がデザインされている。八咫烏はサッカー日本代表のエンブレムやシンボルマークに使用されており、境内の社務所には日本代表の＜お守り＞が販売されている。

Both the entrance gate and the lantern crest in front of the shrine hall are designed with Yatagarasu here and there. The Yatagarasu is used as the emblem and symbol of the national soccer Japan, and the of the Japan national team is sold at the shrine office in the temple grounds.

平安神宮にほど近い東大路通丸太町の交差点にありました。京都熊野三山のひとつだそうで、敷地は決して大きくはありませんが立派な拝殿でした。境内は静かでした。

It was located at the intersection of Higashioji-dori Marutamachi near Heian Jingu Shrine. It is said to be one of the three mountains of Kumano in Kyoto, and although the site is not large, it was a magnificent worship hall. The precincts were quiet.
