京都市東山区の最南部にある臨済宗（りんざい-しゅう）東福寺派の大本山です。
It is the main temple of the Rinzai sect of Tofukuji in the southernmost part of Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City.
鎌倉時代の初期に、当時摂政（せっ‐しょう）を務めていた九條道家（くじょう-みちいえ）の発願によって建立されました。
It was built at the request of Kujo Michiie, who was serving as regent at the time in the early Kamakura period.

寺号（てら-ごう）の「東福寺」は、奈良で最大の寺院として知られていた東大寺の「東」と、当時の奈良で最も隆盛を極めていた興福寺の「福」の字をなぞらえて取ったものです。
The name of the temple “Tofukuji” is a reference to the letter “Higashi” in Todaiji Temple, which was known as the largest temple in Nara, and the character “Fuku” in Kofukuji, which was the most prosperous temple in Nara at the time.
境内（けいだい）には鎌倉・室町期の絵画や開山聖一国師（かいざん-しょういちこくし）が宋（そう）より持ち帰った貴重な書蹟類、文書などが多数所蔵されており、文化財の宝庫となっています。
The precincts are home to a large number of paintings from the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, as well as valuable calligraphy and documents brought back from the Song Dynasty by Kaizan Seiichi Kokushi, making it a treasure trove of cultural properties.
また、全長約15メートルもの釈迦如来像を有していたと言われています。訪れたことがない方でも、美しい紅葉の景色をテレビなどで見たことがあるかもしれませんね。
It is said that it had a statue of Shakyamuni with a total length of about 15 meters. Even if you’ve never been there, you may have seen the beautiful autumn foliage scenery on TV.

とても広い寺域を誇ります。塔頭（たっちゅう）寺院が幾つもあり、あちこち回りましたが、とても半日では無理です。通天橋からの紅葉が有名ですが、紅葉時期を外しても十分に楽しめる大寺院でした。東福寺駅からもほど近く、歩いて行くことができます。
It boasts a very large temple area. There are many temples, and I went around here and there, but it is impossible to do it in half a day. It is famous for the autumn leaves from Tsutenbashi, but it was a large temple that you can fully enjoy even if you are not in the autumn foliage season. It is not far from Tofukuji Station and can be reached on foot.
紅葉していなくてもとても綺麗で静かでゆっくりと散策できます。緑がきれいだったので小雨が降っているくらいの方がより綺麗に見れるかもしれません。蚊が出るので虫よけを忘れずにしていってください。
Even if the leaves are not falling, it is very beautiful, quiet and you can take a leisurely stroll. The greenery was beautiful, so it might be more beautiful to see it when it was raining lightly. Mosquitoes will come out, so don’t forget to repel insects.
紅葉の時期は大変な人出のようなので、あえてこの時期に訪問しました。京都五山（ござん）の一つだけあって堂々たるたたずまいです。それなりに観光客がいましたが、清々しい新緑のお庭をゆっくりと散策できました。
It seems that there are a lot of people during the autumn foliage season, so I dared to visit at this time. It is one of the five mountains of Kyoto and has a majestic appearance. There were some tourists, but I was able to take a leisurely stroll through the refreshing fresh green garden.
