元太鼓櫓（もとたいこ-やぐら）は、城郭内において重要な役割を果たしていました。「太鼓櫓（たいこ-やぐら）」という名前は、かつてここで太鼓を鳴らして時刻や危険を知らせたことに由来します。
Mototaiko -Yagura played an important role within the castle walls. The name “Taiko Yagura” comes from the fact that drums were once played here to announce the time of day and danger.
元太鼓櫓（もとたいこ-やぐら）は、二層の木造建築で、熊本城内の櫓の中でも特に目立つ存在でした。2016年の熊本地震では、熊本城の多くの建物と同様に被害を受け、一部が崩壊しました。現在も復旧工事が進められており、元の姿を再現するための修復作業が行われています。
