Komon-mae Street has long been known as the street in front of the main gate of Chion-in, and is deeply related to the history of Chion-in, the main temple of the Pure Land sect.

古門前通りは、東大路通から西側の大和大路通に至る全長約400メートルの東西の通りで、北側を古門前通、南側を新門前通が並行して東西に走っています。

Komon-mae-dori is an east-west street with a total length of about 400 meters from Higashioji-dori to Yamato-oji-dori on the west side, with Komon-mae-dori running parallel to the north and Shinmon-mae-dori on the south side.

名前の由来、👦

origin of the name,

古門前通りは、浄土宗（じょうどしゅう）の総本山・知恩院（ちおんいん）の表門前の通りのことで、新門前通りの名称は古門前通りに対するものです。

Komon-mae Street is the street in front of the main gate of Chion-in, the main temple of the Jodo sect, and the name of Shinmon-mae Street is for Komon-mae Street.

ちなみに知恩院は平安時代後期の1175年（承安5年）に浄土宗の開祖・法然上人（ほうねんしょうにん）が東山・吉水（よしみず）に草庵を結び、専修念仏（せんじゅねんぶつ）を布教したのが起源です。

Incidentally, Chion-in originated in 1175 (Joan 5) in the late Heian period, when the founder of the Pure Land sect, Hōnen Shōnin, established a soan in Yoshimizu in Higashiyama and preached the Senjunenbutsu.
