白川の三条通に架かる橋のたもとにある石標です。この石標は江戸時代初期に建立され、京都市に現存する最古の道標とされています。

It is a stone marker at the foot of the bridge over Sanjo-dori in Shirakawa. This stone marker was erected in the early Edo period and is considered to be the oldest surviving signpost in Kyoto City.

この道標は高さ157cm、幅27cm、奥行24cmの標石で、北側に「三条通白川橋」、東側に「是よりひだり ちおんゐん ぎおん きよ水みち」、南に「延宝六戊午三月吉日　京都為無案内旅人立之　施主 為二世安楽」と刻まれています。

This signpost is 157 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, and is engraved with the inscription “Sanjo-dori Shirakawa Bridge” on the north side, “Koreyori Hidari Chion Gion Kiyomizu Michi” on the east side, and “Enpo 六戊午三月吉日京都為無案内旅人立之 施主 為二世安楽”.

地下鉄東山駅からすぐのところにある橋です。橋自体は小さくごく普通ですが、東詰には京都市に現存する最古の道標、三条通白川橋道標があります。京都に不案内な旅人のために1678年に建立されたとのこと、京都には至る所に史跡が残されているので街歩きも楽しめます。周辺は白川沿いに柳の木が立ち並び、とても風情があります。

It is a bridge located just a short distance from Higashiyama Subway Station. The bridge itself is small and quite ordinary, but there is the oldest surviving signpost in Kyoto City, the Sanjo-dori Shirakawa Bridge signpost. It was built in 1678 for travelers who are unfamiliar with Kyoto, and there are historical sites everywhere in Kyoto, so you can enjoy walking around the city. The surrounding area is lined with willow trees along the Shirakawa River, and it is very tasteful.

白川を渡る三条通りの橋です。白川は川幅がないので橋としては小ぶりでさりげないわけですが、東詰に京都最古の道標が残されていて、そちらにも注目ですね。17世紀後半、延宝年間のものだとか。三条通りは昔から東海道の通る幹線ですが、ここから白川沿いに進めば「知恩院」「祇園」そして「清水寺」に近いです、という案内が刻まれています。

It is a bridge on Sanjo Street that crosses the Shirakawa River. The Shirakawa River is not wide enough to be a bridge, so it is small and casual as a bridge, but there is the oldest signpost in Kyoto left in Higashizume, which is also noteworthy. It is said to be from the late 17th century, during the Yanbao year. Sanjo-dori has long been the main line through which the Tokaido Road passes, but if you proceed along the Shirakawa River from here, it is engraved with a guide that it is close to “Chion-in”, “Gion” and “Kiyomizu-dera”.
