聖福寺には、扶桑最初禅窟があります。扶桑最初禅窟は、日本最古の石窟群の一つで、法隆寺の建立に関わった聖徳太子が、中国から帰国した際に、中国の石窟仏教美術を参考にして作らせたとされています。
Shofukuji Temple has the Fuso First Zen Cave. Fuso First Zen Cave is one of the oldest caves in the Japan, and it is said that Prince Shotoku, who was involved in the construction of Horyu-ji Temple, had it made by referring to Chinese cave Buddhist art when he returned from China.
福岡市営地下鉄・祇園駅から北北西に200ｍの場所にある聖福寺の総門の自然石の門柱に「扶桑最初禅窟」と彫り込まれているほか、脇に設置された寺の由来を書いた説明板にも「扶桑最初禅窟」と書かれています。

聖福寺は、鎌倉幕府初代将軍源頼朝公より賜った土地に、1195年に日本最初の禅寺として創建されました。栄西禅師を開山として、七堂伽藍を建立し、丈六の釈迦・弥勒・弥陀の三世仏を安置していたと伝えられています。聖福寺の境内は国の史跡に指定されており、江戸時代に再建された伽藍があります。

栄西（えいさい）は、平安時代末期から鎌倉時代初期の僧で、日本に臨済宗黄龍派の禅をはじめて伝え、建仁寺を開山した、臨済宗建仁寺派の開祖です。
Eisai was a monk from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period, and was the founder of the Rinzai sect Kenninji school, which first introduced the Zen of the Rinzai sect of the Yellow Dragon school to Japan and opened Kenninji Temple.
栄西はその後、北条政子の招きで鎌倉の寿福寺の住職を務め、源頼家の庇護を受けて京都に建仁寺を建立し、更に奈良・東大寺の住職を努めた後、1215年に75歳で没した。
Eisai later served as a resident priest at Jufukuji Temple in Kamakura at the invitation of Hojo Masako, built Kenninji Temple in Kyoto under the protection of Minamoto Yoriie, and served as a resident priest at Todaiji Temple in Nara before dying in 1215 at the age of 75.
