知恩院（ちおんいん）は、京都市東山区にある浄土宗の総本山です。正式名称は華頂山大谷寺知恩教院。法然（ほうねん）上人が開祖となった仏教の宗派である浄土宗の中心的な寺院であり、徳川家将軍の家康、秀忠、家光の加護を受けて、壮大な寺院として現在に残っています。

Chion-in is the main temple of the Jodo sect in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto. The official name of the temple is Mt. Kacho Oya Temple. It is the central temple of the Pure Land sect, a sect of Buddhism founded by Hōnen, and remains as a magnificent temple with the blessings of the Tokugawa shoguns Ieyasu, Hidetada, and Iemitsu.

知恩院の境内には、国宝に指定されている「三門」や「御影堂（みえいどう）」などの建築物があります。また、知恩院は800年以上の歴史を持ち、多くの人々にとって「心のよりどころ」となっている場所です。

三門のスケールを感じたり、参道のつくりなどお参りする楽しみが沢山ありました。御影堂（みえいどう）の参拝のご利益を得たり施設ごとに興味が湧く感じです。千姫のお墓や御廟（びょう）もあり歴史を訪れる価値もあります。時間があれば庭園を眺めてゆっくりしたいところです。

There were many pleasures in visiting the temple, such as feeling the scale of Sanmon and making the approach. I feel like I get the benefits of visiting Mieido and am interested in each facility. There is a tomb of Senhime and a byo and it is also worth visiting the history. If you have time, you will want to relax and look at the garden.

巨大な三門の後ろの階段は『ラストサムライ』の冒頭で、御所（ごしょ）への通路として登場しました。境内は拝観無料で、宗派を開創した法然（ほうねん）の墓所まで無料で公開してくれるのは浄土宗の心意気ですね。七不思議を探す、定期的に公開される三門に登るなど様々な楽しみ方が出来ます。

The staircase behind the giant Sanmon appeared at the beginning of The Last Samurai as a passage to the Imperial Palace. The precincts are free to visit, and it is the spirit of the Pure Land sect that even the tomb of Hounen, the founder of the sect, is open to the public for free. You can enjoy various ways such as searching for the Seven Wonders and climbing the Sanmon Gate, which is regularly open to the public.

青蓮院（しょうれんいん）を出てすぐ南にあるのが、浄土宗総本山知恩院です。とはいえ、結構広いですし、階段を上がる必要があります。こちらの拝観の受付時間は16時までですが、その時間までなら下の三門（国宝）から御影堂（みえいどう）前までシャトルバスが出ています。

Just south of Shoren-in is the Jodo Buddhist temple of Chion-in. However, it is quite large and you need to go up the stairs. The reception time for this visit is until 16 o’clock, but until that time, there is a shuttle bus from the lower Sanmon (National Treasure) to Mieido-mae.

国宝に指定されている御影堂（みえいどう）や阿弥陀堂へのお参りは自由ですが、拝観には拝観料が必要です。拝観を希望するのであれば、まず御影堂（みえいどう）に上がり、その裏へ回り、渡り廊下を集会場へ向かってください。その奥、方丈（ほうじょう）前に受付があります。

You are free to visit Mieido and Amida Hall, which are designated as national treasures, but you need to pay an admission fee to visit. If you wish to visit, please go up to Mieido first, go around to the back, and go down the corridor to the meeting hall. There is a reception desk in front of Hojo.

方丈（ほうじょう）前の方丈庭園と権現堂（徳川家康は浄土宗だったそうです）を見学した後、法然（ほうねん）上人の草庵（そうあん）があった勢至堂（せいしどう）の裏手まで登ります。山上で京都の町を一望した後、裏手から勢至堂（せいしどう）へ。勢至堂には拝観を申し込まなくても自由にお参りできます。

After visiting the Hojo Garden and Gongendo Temple in front of Hojo (Tokugawa Ieyasu was a Pure Land Buddhist), we climbed up to the back of Seishido Hall, where the Hōnen Guru’s Soan was located. After overlooking the city of Kyoto on the mountain, go to Seishido from the back. You can freely visit the temple without applying for a visit.
