知恩院は、浄土宗の宗祖である法然（ほうねん）が後半生を過ごし、没したゆかりの地に建てられた寺院で、江戸時代以降に現在のような大規模な伽藍（がらん）が建立されました。

Chion-in is a temple built on the site where Hōnen, the founder of the Pure Land sect, spent the latter half of his life and died, and the current large-scale garan was built after the Edo period.

知恩院は庶民から徳川将軍家まで幅広く信仰を集め、今でも京都の人々からは「ちよいんさん」「ちおいんさん」と親しみを込めて呼ばれています。

Chion-in was worshipped by a wide range of people, from the common people to the Tokugawa shogun family, and is still affectionately called “Chiyon-san” or “Chi-on-san” by the people of Kyoto.

東山を借景とした四季折々の趣があります。特に秋の紅葉の時期には一段と風情が感じられます。紅葉時期は駐車場の利用ができませんので、公共交通機関をご利用いただくことをおすすめします。

It has the flavor of the four seasons with Higashiyama as a borrowed scenery. Especially during the autumn foliage season, you can feel the atmosphere even more. Parking is not available during the autumn foliage season, so we recommend using public transportation.
