開山は伝説的な存在である最澄です。
Kaizan is a legendary being.
妙法院は、皇族や貴族の子弟が歴代住持となる別格の寺院を指して「門跡」と称されており、青蓮院や三千院（梶井門跡）とともに「天台三門跡」として名高い寺院です。
Myoho-in is called “Monru” to refer to a temple of a different class where the children of the imperial family and aristocrats have lived for generations, and it is a temple famous as the “Tendai Sanmon Ruins” along with Seiren-in Temple and Sansen-in Temple (Kajii Gate Ruins).
また、後白河法皇や豊臣秀吉とのゆかりもあります。妙法院は、三十三間堂を塔頭に持つ格式のある寺院として知られています。
There is also a connection with Go-Shirakawa and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Myohoin is known as a prestigious temple with the Sanjusangendo Hall at the top.
近世以降には、方広寺（ほうこう‐じ）京の大仏や蓮華王院（れんげ おういん）三十三間堂を管理下に置いていました。
From the early modern period onwards, the Great Buddha of Hokoji Temple and the Sanjusangendo Hall of Renge Oin were under the control of the temple.

天台宗の寺院。皇族・貴族の子弟が住持を歴代務める寺院を指す「門跡」で、青蓮院（しょうれんいん）、三千院（さんぜんいん）とともに「天台三門跡」と称されてきた。
The temple of the Tendai sect. It is a “gate ruin” that refers to a temple where the children of the imperial family and aristocrats have served as residents for successive generations, and has been called the “Tendai Sanmon Ruins” along with Shoren-in and Sansen-in (Mr./Ms. Zen-in).
方広寺（ほうこう‐じ）や三十三間堂の蓮華王院（れんげ おういん）を所管に置いたこともあるという。毎年5月14日（五月会）のみ終日無料公開するほか、不定期の特別拝観がある。
It is said that he has also placed Hokoji Temple and the Lotus Pavilion of Sanjusangendo in charge of it. It is open to the public free of charge all day only on May 14 (May Party) every year, and there are special visits on an irregular basis.
東山七条の観光資源が集中したエリアにあるが、ここだけ非公開。一度、足を踏み入れたい寺院です。
